Barcelona will host a crucial gathering of the global progressive family on 17–18 April for the Global Progressive Mobilisation (GPM). We will be there with our ideas and proposals on Progressive Cities: First Line of Democracy, on Saturday 18 April from 12.00 to 13:00, engaging mayors and locally elected leaders in a lively, participatory discussion, exchanging experiences, strengthening collaboration, and shaping the future of progressive local politics.

The progressive answer to authoritarian nationalism is not a better counter-narrative. It is a better life. And cities are where that better life is either built or abandoned.

Inequality in a city is not a statistic: it is the comparison between your street and the street three blocks away. That comparison either generates solidarity or generates resentment. Progressive mayors are in the business of closing that gap, and therefore in the business of deciding whether people turn toward each other or against each other.

The far right offers people an enemy. We offer them a city that works. That is not a weaker argument. It is the only argument that lasts. And when mayors from Barcelona to Buenos Aires, from Rome to Freetown, from Athens to New York stand together and say the same thing: that progressive governance delivers, that cities care, that the alternative to hate is not silence but competent, values-driven leadership.

That is no longer a local story. It is the beginning of a global one.
